As per a report released by the Goa Traffic Police Department in April 2019, a year-on-year growth rate of 13.9% in the number of vehicles on Goa’s roads, there was a 5.31% decrease in road accidents in 2018. Further, there was a 21.32% drop in road accident fatalities in 2018 as compared to 2017, and this figure is the lowest in 15 years.  The Goa Traffic Police took several steps to improve road safety. This included discouragement of driving under the influence of alcohol by referring cases to the court resulting in stricter punishments for such offenses. Further, as per the Supreme Court’s directive, a total of 24,195 cases of traffic rule violations were forwarded to the Goa Transport Department for cancellation of driving licenses leading to a suspension of around 4000 licenses.
