As of April 2018, Curtorim was on its way to being declared a biodiversity heritage site (BHS) under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. A proposal for this was prepared by the Curtorim Biodiversity Management Committee and by means of a presentation, local stakeholders were informed about the proposal and had given their approval for the same. The Goa State Biodiversity Board was planning to submit the said proposal to the State government for approval as soon as the public consultation process was completed. In its ambit, the proposal has included – Curtorim’s 6 major lakes along with their associated khazans, mangroves and agroecosystems as the extent of the BHS. Once the BHS is declared, local communities are to be involved in the conservation of these ecosystems and the National Biodiversity Authority may also be roped in to support the BHS financially. Further, no developmental activities that may damage these ecosystems will be allowed in the vicinity of the BHS.
