In order to make the Goa Children’s Act of 2003 more effective and to curb its misuse, in February 2019 the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights planned to bring together relevant stakeholders within the state to discuss their proposals to amend the act.  Some of the issues to be discussed included the misuse of the definition of “child” for filing cases of rape when in reality the case involves wilful elopement, the need for district level children’s courts, broadening the definition of incest to include guardians/parents of adopted children as well as sensitisation of teachers about the Act.
