In an effort to document the issue of roadkills in the state, Study and Awareness of Wildlife & Environment (SAWE), an NGO based in Goa is conducting a survey to record mortality rates of animals on highways in Margao and Ponda. As per their findings, more than one roadkill occur every day on these highways. Currently, the data pertains only to 6-7 roads, so the actual number of roadkills occurring will be much higher. The organisation hopes to cover more ground provided they have enough volunteers. They plan to compile the resulting data into a report to be submitted to relevant government authorities in the hope that appropriate measures such as barricades and signboards are put up in sensitive areas where the incidence of roadkills are higher. Such measures will ensure that drivers drive more cautiously in these areas thereby reducing the incidence.
